Choosing wrist supports

All our supports are grade 1 to 4 depending on the support level they provide. The right one for you depends on whether you have a particular injury and the level of support you need.

Best support for a weak wrist

If you do not have a specific injury or have recovered but just need a little extra support then we recommend the Neoprene wrist wrap. Although a simple support, it is comfortable, easy to wear, has adjustable support without restricting normal movement.

Wrist supports & braces for specific injuries

We recommend the following wrist supports for these common wrist injuries:

Wrist sprains & strains - the Neoprene wrist wrap is ideal for mild to moderate wrist sprains or strains. It wraps around the wrist securely protecting your wrist from further injury. Alternatively, the Advanced Ultimate Compression Wrist Splint for more severe sprains limits movement and is made of elastic so retains less body heat than neoprene.

Carpal tunnel syndrome - caused by compression of the median nerve. Symptoms include chronic wrist pain, numbness, pins, and needles. The Carpal tunnel wrist splint is specifically designed to support and immobilise the wrist, allowing it to heal.

Arthritis - good wrist support for arthritis helps reduce pain and improves joint stability through gentle compression. If movement is painful, a splinted wrist support restricts excessive motion, helping to protect the joint and relieve symptoms. Neoprene supports also retain warmth, which many people find helps reduce stiffness and improves comfort during daily activities.

Wrist tendonitis - occurs when the tendons around the wrist become irritated and painful. In many long term cases the condition is more accurately described as tendinopathy (degeneration) rather than tendonitis (acute inflammation). The Neoprene wrist wrap helps by limiting excessive movement and supporting, but allowing everyday movements. For more painful conditions, a wrist splint provides a higher level of support by immobilising the wrist.

Thumb sprains - often occurs when your thumb bends backwards, damaging the metacarpophalangeal joint or MCP at the base of your thumb.

The Thumb Stabiliser helps prevent your thumb bending backwards. The metal splints or spoons along the wrist and thumb provide support along with adjustable straps.

High support level

If you need the maximum support then a wrist splint which physically restricts the movement in your wrist may be the right one for you.

Ultimate Performance have designed a selection of products to support injured, sprained or strained elbows and wrists.  Available in different sizes, styles and materials to suit all requirements. All our supports are graded by support level. Level 1: Basic, Level 2: Moderate, Level 3: Pro and Level 4: Maximum.

Wrist Support FAQs

Materials & Design

What does class 1 medical device mean?

A Class 1 Medical Device is a product that has been registered and manufactured in accordance with UK and EU medical device regulations. All out supports are class 1 medical devices giving you assurance that they have been designed for its intended medical purpose and meet recognised standards for safety, quality and performance.

What is the benefit of neoprene?

Neoprene is a rubber based material. Its elastic properties mean it is great for applying compression. It retains body heat, which increases blood flow encouraging healing. Neoprene is often preferred for chronic overuse injuries (wrist strains).

Wrist splints vs wraps

A wrist splint is designed to immobilise the wrist and prevent movement. It contains rigid metal stays or splints that hold the wrist in a neutral position, making it ideal for conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, severe sprains, fractures, or other injuries where movement needs to be restricted to allow healing.

A wrist wrap provides support and compression whilst allowing a greater range of movement. It wraps around the wrist and can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the level of support. Wrist wraps are often suitable for mild sprains, tendon injuries, wrist weakness, and providing additional support during sport or daily activities.

In general, choose a wrist splint when you need maximum support and immobilisation, and a wrist wrap when you need adjustable support whilst maintaining normal wrist movement.

Elastic vs neoprene

The main difference between elastic and neoprene wrist supports is the amount of warmth they provide. Neoprene is thicker and retains body heat, helping to keep muscles, tendons and joints warm. Many people find this beneficial for chronic conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis and wrist stiffness.

Elastic wrist supports are lighter, more breathable and generally more comfortable for prolonged wear, particularly in warm conditions. They provide compression and support without retaining as much heat, making them a popular choice for sport, mild injuries and everyday use.

In general, neoprene supports are often preferred for pain relief and chronic injuries, whilst elastic supports are ideal when comfort, breathability and freedom of movement are the priority.

Size & fit

What size do I need?

Check the sizing information on the specific product page. Many of our supports are one size fits all and are adjustable.

Our Advanced range come in four sizes. Measure around the wrist.

  • Small (13 – 15cm)
  • Medium (15 – 17cm)
  • Large (17 – 19cm)
  • XLarge (19 – 21cm)

What if I am between sizes?

If your measurements fall between two sizes, we generally recommend choosing the larger size for comfort and to accommodate any swelling. If you prefer a firmer fit and additional compression, the smaller size may be more appropriate.
