What is the best ankle support for running?
Ankle supports come in different styles and levels of support. The right one depends on how much stability you need and whether you’re recovering from an injury.
For running, you generally want moderate support with good mobility. If the ankle is too restricted, your movement becomes unnatural and may increase the risk of further injury. There’s always a balance between support and freedom of movement.
Should you wear an ankle support when running?
Yes, they can be helpful, especially if you’re returning from injury or have weak or unstable ankles. They can add confidence and reduce strain.
That said, no brace will fully prevent injury. You should only run pain-free and combine support use with strengthening and balance (proprioception) exercises.
General support (no specific injury)
If you just want light support, an elastic ankle support is ideal.
It provides gentle compression, is comfortable to run in, and allows the ankle to breathe without overheating.
Moderate support
For a bit more support, an advanced compression ankle support is a step up.
It combines elastic compression with additional straps to give extra sideways (lateral) stability — useful after a mild sprain.
Maximum support
If you have ongoing instability or repeated sprains, go for a neoprene ankle support with straps. This allows adjustable support and offers stronger lateral stability while still being suitable for running.
Ankle rehab
If you’ve had an ankle injury, your proprioception (balance awareness) is often reduced. This increases the risk of re-injury — so rehab exercises are just as important as the support itself.
