Types of Sports Tape
Sports tape comes in various types, each designed for specific purposes and applications. Ultimate Performance range of sports tapes include zinc oxide, EAB, Cohesive, Rip-Light, Kinesiology and Underwrap.
The following are popular in sport:
Zinc oxide tape
Zinc oxide or 'Athletic' tape is a rigid tape made of cotton or synthetic materials. It provides support and stability to joints, such as ankles, wrists, and fingers. Therefore therapists use in sports like football, basketball, and volleyball to prevent or manage injuries.
Kinesiology Tape
Kinesiology sports tape, often referred to as "k-tape," is a flexible and elastic tape designed to mimic the elasticity of human skin. It provides support to muscles and joints while allowing for a wide range of motion.
Ultimate Performance Kinesiology tape comes individually packaged in 6 different colours or as a full carton with display box. As a result, great for easy storage in your treatment room. Our Advanced Kinesiology Tape is ultra-light and ultra-thin – you’d hardly know it was there and is less likely to rub or snag on clothing.
Underwrap
Underwrap is a thin foam-like tape. Some therapists use it as an underlayer for athletic tape or EAB. As a result, it helps protect the skin from irritation caused by the adhesive of the sports tape and provides a comfortable base for taping.
Cohesive Tape
Cohesive tape, sometimes called self-adhering or self-sticking tape, sticks to itself but not to the skin or hair. Therefore, it is great for wrapping joints or securing bandages. Team sports like football and rugby frequently use Cohesive tape.
EAB
EAB or elastic adhesive bandage is a stretchy, elastic tape that provides compression and support. Therefore, its most common use is around muscles as anchor points. As you exercise, your muscles expand which is why elastic EAB is most suitable.
Finger Tape
Finger tape is a narrow, adhesive zinc oxide tape ideal for supporting fingers or thumbs. This means it is great for contact sports, climbing or ju-jitsu.
Surgical Tape
Surgical tape is used to secure bandages, dressings, or other medical devices during sports-related injuries. It's not typically used as a primary support or for joint stabilization.
Sports tape for Specific Injuries
Patellofemoral pain taping uses a combination of strong zinc oxide sports tape and light fix tape to provide patella tracking support. Plantar fasciitis taping and shin splints taping use 2.5cm or sometimes 3.8cm zinc oxide tape.
